FyberSearch Newsletter #27 (11-01-04 through 11-19-04)

It has been a busy time at FyberSearch in the last few weeks. First the acquisition of FeedPlex (visit http://www.fybersearch.com/blog/news-link.php?post_filename=11-04/4-post.html ) and then the release of FyberSearch Web Thoughts.

FyberSearch Web Thoughts is a sentence search engine that allows you to see what various web pages have to say about your favorite issues. Here is a quote from the press release:

“FyberSearch Web Thoughts is not like a typical search engine where users enter a search query and view a list of links to (hopefully) the most relevant web pages. Instead, FyberSearch Web Thoughts takes a search query and displays the most relevant sentences followed by the source web page. Its primary purpose is not to find the most relevant web pages but to find the most relevant statements.”

You can try FyberSearch Web Thoughts by visiting http://www.fybersearch.com/wt

I am sure I will be updating it in the future so let me know how you think it can be improved.

FyberSearch Web Thoughts

Below is a copy of the press release announcing FyberSearch Web Thoughts:

FyberSearch Announces the Release of a Sentence Search Engine Called "FyberSearch Web Thoughts"

BURIEN, Wash. -- September 15, 2004 - FyberSearch released a tool called "FyberSearch Web Thoughts" that allows users to discover what web pages think and say about all kinds of subjects and issues.

FyberSearch Web Thoughts URL: www.fybersearch.com/wt

FyberSearch Web Thoughts is not like a typical search engine where users enter a search query and view a list of links to (hopefully) the most relevant web pages. Instead, FyberSearch Web Thoughts takes a search query and displays the most relevant sentences followed by the source web page. Its primary purpose is not to find the most relevant web pages but to find the most relevant statements.

"This approach provides Internet users with a completely different search experience." Says Nathan Enns, Owner and Founder of FyberSearch. "Depending on the type of information sought after, a user no longer has to type in complete questions into answer engines or sort through and click on hundreds of results in general web search engines. The user can simply enter a keyword into FyberSearch Web Thoughts and see what various web pages say about their favorite issues."

Users also have access to various advanced options that allow them to further refine and control the sentences being displayed.

Advanced features include:

1. Setting the number of results per page.

2. Specifying the sentence separator (is, is not, will, will not, has, has not, etc).

3. Choosing which section of the sentence to search (match keywords before or after the sentence separator).

4. Using Boolean, phrase and truncation options by placing a - before any word to negate it, placing the entire search query in quotes to search for the exact phrase, and ending any word with * to search for all plural forms of the same word as well as the word itself.

About FyberSearch:

FyberSearch is a search engine founded in November 2003 by 19 year old Nathan Enns. The FyberSearch mission is "To provide users with the level of control they need to find the results they desire". FyberSearch offers many advanced features that users can easily modify until they find the information they are looking for.

News Blog Guest - Jason Haines
By Nathan Enns on Wednesday, November 10th, 2004 at 12:00 AM
I am very pleased to announce that Jason Haines has taken the time to write an article for the FyberSearch News Blog regarding search engine technology and FyberSearch. Jason Haines is the owner of Repus Technologies. Thanks for the article Jason :-)

The Technology of Search: Through the Eyes of a Web Designer by Jason Haines

As of October 28, 2004 Google is currently searching over 4.2 billion web pages. Each page contains unique content and diverse information that millions of web surfers seek each and every month. Although Google is a fine tuned machine, it is lacking in the area of advance search capabilities.

Have you ever tried to search for something on the web that just seems almost impossible to find? I have, and it’s not because the information isn’t available, it’s because the leading search engines don’t give the user the control over their search. As it is now, the user types in a word or phrase and the search engine returns what it decides is relevant based on a number of complex mathematical algorithms. If the search engine returns results that are not relevant to your search, your options are to either change your key words and or phrases, or try another search engine.

The truth is that the major search engines aren’t doing much to ensure the users can easily find the information they are looking for. Users want fast and relevant results without having to browse through 10+ pages of irrelevant information.

Wouldn’t it be great if the user could customize the results of their search, removing irrelevant keywords therefore generating results that are more relevant to their needs? It only makes sense, so why are the major search engines ignoring these seemingly simple technologies. It’s hard to say, but thanks to FyberSearch and the hard work of Nathan Enns (Owner of FyberSearch), relevant results are no longer a chore to obtain.

FyberSearch has been aggressively pushing the limits of search technology since its birth in November 2003. With features such as “Refine Search” “Design Your Results” and “Instantly Add URL” it’s obvious that FyberSearch is headed in the right direction. It’s great to see an underdog such as FyberSearch doing so much with so little.

Keyword Density and Words Per Page
By Nathan Enns on Sunday, November 7th, 2004 at 12:00 AM
The keyword density feature has been updated and a new feature has been added called words per page. They are both defined below:

Words Per Page

You can use this feature to make sure each result you view contains less than or greater than the number of words you specify. You can enter a custom number on the advanced page or when using the design your results page. When entering a custom number, put a < symbol directly in front of a number to require each web page contain less than that number of words. Put a > symbol or leave blank to require each web page to contain more than that number of words.

Keyword Density

You can use this feature to force each web page to contain the keyword or phrase you searched for X number of times (X = your desired number). You can enter a custom number on the advanced page or when using the design your results page. For example: You want to view web pages that contain the word "business" repeated exactly 10 times. You would specify a keyword density of 10.

FyberSearch Newsletter #26

FyberSearch Newsletter #26 (10-15-04 through 11-01-04)

There is quite a bit going on at FyberSearch right now. Database redesign, more features and the acquisition of the feed search engine feedplex.com. More details:

1. The FyberSearch News Blog is now available in RSS format at http://www.fybersearch.com/blog/rss.xml

2. FeedPlex is a search engine for XML, RSS, ATOM and RDF file formats. Like other feed search engines FeedPlex allows users to search for news, blogs and articles instead of searching for web pages in general. http://www.feedplex.com does not currently allow users to search. The search functions will be enabled when FyberSearch has completed making a few updates. The former owner and founder of feedplex.com was Sid Yadav who currently owns the Daily Rundown at http://www.dailyrundown.com

3. I am also in the process of changing the database design. After it is complete I will release a few more features that I have found useful to use myself. Until it is done the website and search may be slower than normal. I apologize for the inconvenience.

4. FyberSearch is now better able to parse RSS files. Just go to the add URL forms at http://www.fybersearch.com/add-url.php and test it out. Make sure to alert me of any bugs. Also, it will only work if the file you submit ends with .xml .rss or .rdf. You should be able to view the URL as a web crawler and see the XML data processed.

I plan to start answering questions people ask me every so often in this newsletter. This question was asked by Tom Kay. His email address is tom.kay@thanetcomputers.co.uk and his website address is http://www.a1credit.co.uk

****** The Question ******

I use your website quite regularly to check out the performance of my pages from a web crawler’s point of view, but I just wondered if you could let me know how the URL value works.

****** The Answer ******

I am glad to hear that you have found the view like FyberSpider feature useful. Unfortunately I cannot tell you exactly how the FyberSearch URL Value works or else it would be easy for everyone to get a 10.

I can tell you that it takes into consideration the following information.
1. The title of each web page.
2. The content of each web page.
3. The web page address.
4. The domain name.
5. The header, bold, and lists you have in the content.

The impertinence is not necessarily in that order. I would like to tell you more but it would risk the ranking system if I shared more info.

I can also provide a few tips for achieving a higher value and avoid being excluded from the FyberSearch database.

1. Include words in the title tag of each web page that describe that page.

2. Try to put content on each page that relates to the topic(s) of that specific page.

2. Do not use redirecting pages. The web crawler FyberSpider looks at that page and receives an error. Many other web crawlers catalog the data found at the end URL after the redirect is complete. FyberSpider ignores redirecting pages.

3. Do not put the words "302" and "found", "moved" and "permanently", or "not" and “found” in the title of any web page. FyberSpider may decide to ignore the page otherwise.

4. FyberSpider does not catalog any URL that any one of the following characters: ?, &, %, #, or @.

****** The End ******

If you have a question please send an email to owner@fybersearch.com

Make sure to specify what contact information you would like to be included in the newsletter. I cannot promise that all questions are included but I will do my best to answer you question by replying to your email at the very least.

Traffic Statistics for October 2004
By Nathan Enns on Monday, November 1st, 2004 at 12:00 AM
If you are interested in the traffic FyberSearch receives go check out the October 2004 report in the advertising section.

It would always be nice to receive more traffic but I am pleased to see that FyberSearch received more search queries, more page views and of course more unique visitors in October than in September :-)
